BBC Sport’s Nizaar Kinsella has reported that Chelsea have signed 18-year-old midfielder Harrison Bettoni from Wigan Athletic. Bettoni puts pen to paper on a four-year contract running until 2030, with Wigan due training compensation rather than a conventional transfer fee.
Bettoni arrives – and the profile makes sense
Kinsella makes clear this is an academy signing, but one with a clear development pathway already mapped out – Bettoni is expected to go out on loan within six to twelve months. Frankly, that’s the right call. Bettoni played a lot last season in League One for Wigan, so we’re not talking about a raw development prospect who’s only been training with adults. It fits the same template we’ve seen with other recent youth acquisitions – recruit the upside early, protect it with a long contract, and develop on our terms.
