Morgan Rogers is not part of Chelsea’s pre-season tour but he’s already saying exactly the right things – Xabi Alonso’s philosophy resonates with him, the Palmer reunion is genuinely exciting both of them, and a manager who held direct personal conversations with Rogers before the deal was done has secured a club record signing who clearly bought into the vision.

Chelsea published a first interview with Rogers alongside a pre-match press conference from Alonso ahead of Chelsea’s opening pre-season fixture against Western Sydney Wanderers, and between the two of them they’ve painted a pretty clear picture of how this is going to work. Rogers signed a deal until 2033 after completing his club record move from Aston Villa – as we covered in detail when the transfer was confirmed – and he won’t be joining the pre-season tour of Australia and Asia after helping England to a third-place finish at the World Cup. He’s on a well-earned break before reporting to Cobham ahead of the new campaign.
Rogers is taking Alonso’s approach on board – and the Palmer factor is real
Rogers has spoken about having several direct conversations with Alonso before committing to the move, and what he took away from those exchanges matters. He described Alonso’s footballing philosophy as aligning closely with how he sees the game – the freedom to express himself, to be in flow, to play the way he wants to play and be free. He was direct that the manager being here was a massive factor in his decision.
Frankly, that is exactly what you want to hear from a club record signing. Not ‘it’s a great club with great fans’ but a specific, considered answer about why this manager and this system suit the way he plays. Rogers spoke openly about those conversations with Alonso, and his response to them makes clear the dialogue between player and manager was central to the move happening.
Then there’s Cole Palmer. The pair have known each other since England youth football at 14, were together at City, and Palmer has reportedly been non-stop in contact since the deal was done. Palmer posted on his Instagram stories following Rogers’ arrival at Chelsea. These two have been talking about playing together for years and now it’s actually happening. That kind of pre-existing chemistry is not nothing – it could shave months off the integration timeline.
Alonso has a plan – and Rogers’ flexibility is central to it
Alonso was categorical at his pre-match press conference: Rogers is a great signing, he won’t need long to adapt, and he already has a specific idea of how to use both Rogers and Palmer together. He pointed to Rogers’ positional flexibility – comfortable in the pocket between the lines, capable of playing on the right despite being more naturally left-sided – as one of his most valuable qualities for what Chelsea need this season.
Rogers arrives with 85 Premier League appearances, 10 goals and seven assists in 37 league games last season for Villa, and a Europa League winner’s medal. He knows what top-level football demands. As we noted when looking at how Alonso is shaping his attacking options this pre-season, the Rogers arrival raises the bar for everyone around him in that part of the pitch. The competition is real and it’s already doing its job.
We’ll take it.
