Chelsea have confirmed the signing of Valentín Barco from Strasbourg on a seven-year deal – and it is the kind of sister-club development move that has become a feature of Alonso’s rebuild at Stamford Bridge.

The Guardian and Chelsea’s official site have both confirmed the deal, with Barco signing a contract until 2033. Financial details have not been disclosed by either club. The Argentina international arrives from sister club Strasbourg, making him the eighth signing of Alonso’s reign.
From Strasbourg to Chelsea – the sister-club pipeline delivers again
Barco’s route here is one we’ve seen before. He began his career at Boca Juniors before Brighton signed him in 2024. He went out on loan to Sevilla and then Strasbourg, and after helping Strasbourg qualify for the Conference League during the 2024/25 season, the Ligue 1 side made his move permanent. Chelsea have now taken the next step, signing him on a long-term contract.
This is a well-structured piece of business. Strasbourg developed him, converted him positionally, and Chelsea arrive at the end of it with an Argentina international who is ready for Premier League football. Emmanuel Emegha made a similar journey before him, and Alonso’s transfer activity this summer shows no sign of slowing down.
He becomes the eighth arrival of this window, following Morgan Rogers, Maxence Lacroix, Marco Palestra, Denner, Geovany Quenda, Emmanuel Emegha, and Danny Welbeck. That is a significant remodel in a short space of time.

Barco made 54 appearances for Strasbourg in all competitions according to The Guardian, contributing three goals and 11 assists. More importantly, he made that production as a versatile player capable of operating in central midfield as well as his regular position of left-back. That positional flexibility is the key detail here and gives Alonso real options across the left side and in the middle of the park.
He was part of the Argentina squad at the 2026 World Cup, winning his fifth cap in the group-stage win over Jordan. Argentina went on to finish as runners-up, losing the final 1-0 to Spain. Barco was an unused substitute in the semi-final against England, though he did make headlines – his on-pitch celebration after Enzo Fernández equalised led to a heated exchange with Jude Bellingham, who appeared to clip him around the head. Not the worst way to announce yourself to the English game.
He’ll join up with his new teammates on the pre-season tour of Australia and Hong Kong. With Alonso building a squad that needs depth and creativity across the left side and central midfield, Barco fits the profile. We’ll take it.
