Cesar Azpilicueta believes Chelsea’s experienced summer signings can help Reece James grow as captain, with Jordan Henderson, Danny Welbeck and Emiliano Martinez adding seniority around him.
James’s leadership remains a work in progress, but a former Blues captain sees the arrivals as useful support rather than a change in who leads the side. His responsibilities and development under Xabi Alonso have also been a focus as James continues to take on a central role.
Azpilicueta sees experienced signings supporting James
BBC Sport reports that Azpilicueta backed Chelsea’s decision to recruit experienced players this summer. Henderson joined from Brentford, Welbeck from Brighton and Martinez from Aston Villa; they were the club’s first signings aged over 30 in more than four years.
James succeeded Azpilicueta as captain in 2023, when he was 23. Chelsea’s former skipper believes having older players around him can help him in the role, while the club’s many younger players make that support particularly relevant.
There is a clear reason Azpilicueta’s view carries weight: he held the armband before James and saw the defender come through at Chelsea. James has acknowledged that he initially found the responsibility difficult during an injury-hit spell, and former manager Enzo Maresca publicly challenged him to improve his leadership.
The picture has since shifted. BBC Sport reports a belief, both inside and outside the club, that James has grown into the captaincy after avoiding a lengthy injury absence over the past year. That is meaningful progress, although leadership is not a finished job simply because his availability has improved.

Azpilicueta’s assessment is practical: experienced teammates can share the demands around the captain and give him support as he develops. He also expressed confidence that Alonso, his staff and the players will do good work. That is encouragement, not a guarantee that the new balance will immediately solve every problem in the dressing room.
The three additions give that view a specific context. Henderson, Welbeck and Martinez each arrived from a Premier League rival, and each represents a rare over-30 addition by Chelsea in recent seasons. The club has not presented them here as a formal leadership group, so their influence will be judged by what they contribute alongside James on and off the pitch.
For James, the next step is to keep building on the progress already noted while making the most of experienced teammates around him. The support is there; the responsibility of setting standards as captain remains his.
